Natural England - Age

Age

We are committed to ensuring that people of all ages are treated fairly and feel that their contribution to Natural England is important and valued. We also want to attract and retain the best people no matter what their age.

The Age Strand Group recently drew up a Work Experience proposal which was subsequently adopted by the organisation. This initiative looks to help young people appreciate and understand better the natural environment and to consider Natural England as an employer of choice. We aim to do this through improved communications as well as actively supporting initiatives such as “ Backing Young Britain”. As a result of our efforts we will, by the end of March 2010 have nine pilot projects in place throughout the country which will include, work placements, sandwich placements, Young Apprenticeships, Graduate Internships, vacation and volunteer work; we will also be actively supporting the new Environmental and Land-Based Studies Diploma Scheme for 14-16 year olds.

At the other end of the spectrum we will start running pre-retirement sessions and are exploring how we might best capture and then share knowledge from experienced members of staff before they leave our employment.

In the meantime the Age Strand Group is also continuing to monitor and review age data in a good many areas to ensure that the organisation treats everyone fairly and is not, even unintentionally, discriminating or disadvantaging people because of their age.
