The site is a wooded common and contains woodland, areas dominated by bracken, scrub grassland, semi-improved neutral grassland and various aquatic habitats.

Although most NNRs are managed by Natural England, 88 are wholly or partly managed by other bodies approved by Council, under Section 35 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

Ashtead Common NNR is owned and managed by the Corporation of Londonexternal link.

Most of the site is relic woodland pasture which contains over 2,300 pollarded oaks between 300 and 400 years old. These are of great conservation interest and are rare, both in Britain and Europe.

Location and access

The reserve is on the northern outskirts of Ashtead, 2 km south west of Epsom.

By car, access to the site is via minor roads and tracks from the A24, A243 and B280. Ashstead is also adjacent to Junction 9 of the M25.

The common is within 0.5 km of Ashtead railway stationexternal link.

Some paths on the site are suitable for wheelchair access.
