All Natural England reserves and offices have fire plans, which set out actions to be taken in the event of a fire. These define areas of high risk, list the action procedures and show staff contacts and emergency telephone numbers.
Please ensure that you are familiar with the fire plan and/or evacuation procedures for the place where you are volunteering.
If you see a fire whilst volunteering on a National Nature Reserve:
Remember, your safety is the first priority
Do not attempt to tackle the fire yourself. Contact the Fire Brigade immediately. In an emergency dial 999. Contact the Site Manager as soon as you can.
If you can, prepare for the arrival of the Fire Brigade at the pre-arranged meeting point by unlocking gates etc.
When the Fire Brigade arrives, tell them briefly what has happened and point out any valuable feature (for example, the nest site of rare breeding birds) that may need a special effort to protect.
Follow any fire action instructions given to you by the Site Management staff or the Fire Brigade.
