Saturday 22nd May is the International Day of Biodiversity, the highlight of a year of awareness-raising of the plight of life on our planet.
During the year people all over the world are working to safeguard the irreplaceable natural wealth of life on earth and reduce biodiversity loss. This is vital for current and future human wellbeing.
In this area there are special events throughout the summer including:
A Day of Bouncing Bogs and Dragonflies at Chartley Moss National Nature Reserve in Staffordshire on 22nd May, a Haymaking Festival at Mottey Meadows near Wheaton Aston on 19th June and a Springwatch Day at Sandwell Valley Country Park on 6th June. There are also other events on our 16 National Nature Reserves.
At the National Sealife Centre in Birmingham there will be special displays and educational activities throughout the month of May, featuring the precious biodiversity of our English coastline.
Louise Wilce, Marketing Manager of the National Sealife Centre in Birmingham said:
“We are delighted to be working in partnership with Natural England for the International Year of Biodiversity. Conservation is a key topic for us and biodiversity month is an important event in our educational calendar”.
Natural England is one of more than 380 organisations in the UK coming together to support the International Year of Biodiversity, raising awareness of the risks that biodiversity loss imposes of people and nature alike.
Andrew Hearle, of Natural England said:
“All the events running under the IYB banner this year will be fun ways of learning about our species and habitats and their value to our everyday lives and also about the importance of conserving and increasing the quality and rich variety of our biodiversity”.
